Part Time vs Full Time: pros and cons of employment

Tips from the IT recruitment agency Lucky Hunter
Part-time employment has become one of the notable trends in the IT engineering market recently. What are the advantages of part-time, what should you pay attention to and in which cases is it better to prefer full-time? Our tech recruitment agency Lucky Hunter explains in a new article.

IT staff recruitment for part time

Today, many IT talents are considering the possibility of increasing income and are more willing to consider part-time employment options than a few months ago. Therefore, one of the main advantages for finding an employer for a part-time job now is the opportunity to fill a job opening with a highly-qualified professional, who sometimes is almost impossible to find for full time.

In addition, sometimes there are cases when a company needs to expand the team, but there are too few tasks to hire an employee for full time, or the employment is project-based and relevant for the duration of a specific project — in this case, hiring a full-time professional is simply unprofitable. Therefore, it makes sense to estimate the amount of work and plan the amount of hours that may be required to complete it: in general, there is no single norm for the time that a part-time specialist should work — everything is purely individual and, as a rule, is discussed with each specific candidate.
So, at one time we found a senior frontend developer for an American company who joined the customer's project team for just 20 hours a week — if you haven't read our case yet, be sure to read it.
What points does it make sense to pay attention to both the employer and the candidate when recruiting IT talents? First of all, it is the registration of labor relations. As a rule, a company and an IT specialist formalize cooperation under a civil law contract (including with the self-employed) or individual entrepreneur. Employers rarely offer labor code registration for part-time employees — we will tell you about this in the next section.

Such a format of interaction between a company and a specialist affects several nuances at once:
  • 1
Taxes are paid by the specialist themselves.
  • 2
When applying for employment under a contract (especially if a professional works remotely for a foreign company), unlike registration under the Labor Code, the employer can terminate cooperation with the contractor one day without providing any compensation.
  • 3
The conditions that registration under the Labor Code implies also do not apply to the registration of a decree, sick leaves or vacations.

Full-time tech recruitment

Full time is full employment (8 hours a day). If there are a lot of tasks that need to be solved in a particular position and a professional is required on a regular basis, it makes sense to consider candidates for full time.

What could be the important points here?
  • 1
It is often more difficult to find an IT talent for a full-time than for a part-time, especially with a lot of experience: despite changes in the IT market, in some regions (for example, Eastern Europe and the CIS) it is still a candidate market, and competition for each specialist is high.
  • 2
Registration of full-time relationships can also be under a contract (with self-employed or individual entrepreneurs), or by Labour Code. It is one of the most popular forms of employment.

Of course, in some cases there may be certain risks for the employer, but, as a rule, they happen if the employee is not completely conscientious — for example, if necessary, it can be much more difficult to break off the employment relationship with them than with other formats of interaction, even with specific violations by a specialist: it requires a lot of checks, provide evidence of the employee's failure to fulfill their duties.
In general, there is no single action scenario: both forms of employment have their pros and cons, which both the candidate and the company should pay attention to. Employers should approach each position individually and determine which option is closer specifically to them, based on the specifics of the job opening — so, with a small number of tasks or for a temporary project, it is often more relevant to take an employee on a part-time basis, and if the position involves a regular large amount of work, it is better to recruit IT personnel for full-time.
